Travel Is About the Experience — Not Just the Destination
There's something special about travelling. The anticipation before departure, the excitement of arriving somewhere completely unfamiliar, and those unexpected moments that eventually become your favourite memories.
But anyone who travels regularly also knows that getting from one destination to another isn't always glamorous.
Crowded airports, delayed flights, expensive airport food, long layovers, and hotel check-in times that never seem to match your arrival schedule can make travelling unnecessarily exhausting.
What if some of those experiences could actually become part of the enjoyment?
Imagine escaping a busy terminal for a comfortable airport lounge, enjoying breakfast at a luxury hotel without an additional charge, or turning everyday spending into points towards a future adventure.
That's where premium travel credit cards enter the picture.
One of the best-known options in Germany is the American Express Platinum Card.
With an annual cost of €720, it's certainly not a card everyone needs. However, it comes with an extensive collection of travel and lifestyle benefits, including airport lounge access, hotel privileges, travel credits, Membership Rewards points, and comprehensive travel insurance.
And currently, new eligible cardholders can receive up to 85,000 Membership Rewards points through a special referral offer.
But does the Platinum Card genuinely improve the travel experience? And more importantly, are its benefits worth the price?
Let's explore what it actually offers.
1. Airport Lounge Access: Making the Journey Part of the Experience
For frequent travellers, airport lounge access is arguably one of the Platinum Card's most appealing benefits.
Instead of spending several hours at a crowded departure gate, you can potentially enjoy a quieter space with comfortable seating, refreshments, Wi-Fi, and sometimes even showers.
This can make a particularly noticeable difference during longer layovers or when dealing with flight delays.
Access to more than 1,550 airport lounges worldwide
The American Express Platinum Card provides access to the American Express Global Lounge Collection, covering more than 1,550 lounges in over 140 countries.
The network includes several programmes, such as Priority Pass, American Express Centurion Lounges, Plaza Premium Lounges, and other participating partner lounges.
One important advantage is that you generally don't need a Business Class ticket to access an eligible lounge. Depending on the programme, your Platinum membership can provide access even when travelling in Economy.
Bringing someone along
The card includes a Priority Pass membership for the main cardholder and the eligible Platinum supplementary cardholder.
At participating Priority Pass lounges, each can generally bring one guest without an additional per-visit charge, within the applicable annual allowance.
An important limitation: Platinum cards applied for after 1 September 2024 are subject to a combined allowance of 50 Priority Pass person-visits per calendar year, including guest visits. A visit by you and one guest counts as two visits. Different access rules apply to other lounge networks.
Access can also depend on capacity, location, operating hours, and the respective lounge's conditions.
For someone taking multiple international trips annually, I consider lounge access one of the most compelling reasons to investigate the Platinum Card.
It doesn't make a delayed flight disappear, but it can make the time spent waiting considerably more pleasant.
2. Exclusive Condor Benefits: Discounts on Flights and More
One Platinum benefit that deserves more attention is the partnership between American Express and German leisure airline Condor.
If you're planning a holiday or long-haul journey, the Platinum Card can provide discounts on selected Condor flights, together with useful extras that make the airport experience more comfortable.
And unlike some travel benefits that are difficult to value, these discounts can offer straightforward, measurable savings.
Save up to €200 on selected Condor flights
On eligible long-haul routes, Platinum cardholders can receive special discounts on Premium Economy and Business Class tickets.
The current discounts are:
Travel class | One-way discount | Return discount |
Premium Economy | €50 | €100 |
Business Class | €100 | €200 |
For example, booking an eligible return Business Class flight can reduce the ticket price by €200.
That's already a meaningful contribution towards the Platinum Card's annual fee.
The ticket discounts are restricted to eligible long-haul routes and are subject to availability. They don't apply to ordinary Economy tickets or short-haul Business Class fares.
Additional benefits beyond ticket discounts
The cooperation offers more than reduced fares.
Depending on the destination, travel class and booking conditions, Platinum cardholders can also benefit from:
Priority services: Priority check-in, fast-track security at participating airports, priority boarding and priority baggage handling.
Additional checked luggage: An extra checked bag of up to 23 kg on eligible long-haul routes, excluding certain Light and Zero fares.
Sports equipment: An additional sports baggage item on qualifying flights, subject to registration and availability.
Discounted seat reservations: Savings of between €5 and €50 per eligible seat reservation, depending on the flight and cabin.
What's particularly interesting is that some benefits are available on short- and medium-haul flights as well.
That means even a relatively short holiday flight could become more comfortable with priority services or discounted seat reservations.
How to book Condor flights with your Amex Platinum benefits
The booking process has recently become easier.
Previously, customers needed to arrange eligible bookings by telephone through the American Express travel service.
Since May 2026, the benefits can be accessed digitally.
Here's how:
Open the Amex Experiences app and sign in with your American Express account.
Find the dedicated Condor benefit and select the flight-booking option.
Follow the link to the special Condor booking platform.
Choose your flight, travel class and eligible extras.
Add the relevant benefits during the booking process.
Complete payment using your American Express Platinum Card.
Eligible discounts are applied during the booking process, generally at the final payment stage.
Important: Simply booking a flight through the regular Condor website doesn't automatically qualify you for the Platinum benefits.
The booking must use the designated channel, and benefits generally cannot be added retrospectively to an existing reservation.
The €200 American Express online travel credit also cannot be combined with this special Condor booking benefit.
The partnership currently runs until 31 December 2028, subject to the applicable conditions.
You can find the full information in the official American Express Condor benefits guide.
Is the Condor benefit actually valuable?
If you're someone who regularly books premium cabins, the discounts can be particularly attractive.
A €200 return-flight saving, combined with the convenience of priority services, may make a noticeable difference.
But even Economy passengers can benefit from selected additional services.
My recommendation is still to compare the final ticket price with other available offers before booking. A special cardholder discount doesn't automatically make a particular flight the cheapest or best option.
3. Hotel Benefits: A More Comfortable Stay
A beautiful hotel can be an experience in itself.
Whether you're planning a city break in Tokyo, a relaxing holiday in Greece, or a weekend somewhere in Europe, little extras can make a surprisingly big difference.
The Platinum Card offers two different types of hotel advantages: privileges through selected American Express hotel booking programmes and complimentary status levels with participating hotel loyalty programmes.
Fine Hotels + Resorts
American Express Fine Hotels + Resorts (FHR) is a collection of participating premium hotels where eligible bookings can unlock additional benefits.
These typically include:
Daily breakfast for two people.
A property credit of at least US$100 for eligible expenses.
Room upgrades upon arrival, when available.
Early check-in from noon, subject to availability.
Guaranteed late check-out at 4 PM.
Complimentary Wi-Fi.
Imagine checking out of a hotel at 4 PM instead of 11 AM when your return flight isn't until late evening.
That extra time can be worth considerably more than it initially appears.
It's important to remember that these benefits are tied to qualifying FHR reservations and cannot simply be expected at every luxury hotel.
The Hotel Collection
The Hotel Collection is another American Express programme offering additional advantages at selected properties.
For eligible stays of at least two consecutive nights, benefits generally include a US$100 property credit and a possible room upgrade.
Other privileges may vary according to the property and booking conditions.
One practical consideration: hotels booked through special programmes aren't always the cheapest option. Compare the final room price with publicly available rates before assuming you're saving money.
Hotel status without the usual number of stays
Platinum cardholders can also enrol in selected hotel loyalty programmes and receive elevated status without completing the usual qualification requirements.
Current partners include Hilton Honors Gold, Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite, Radisson Rewards Premium, MeliáRewards Gold and ALL Accor Gold, among others.
Depending on the programme and property, status benefits can include room upgrades, bonus loyalty points, breakfast-related perks or flexible check-out.
For frequent hotel guests, these benefits can become valuable over time. However, availability isn't guaranteed, and the specific hotel programme rules always apply.
4. Travel Credits: Benefits That Can Offset the Annual Fee
At €60 per month, the American Express Platinum Card is an expensive financial product.
The most practical way to assess its value is to understand the credits included in the membership.
These can offset a meaningful part of the annual fee — provided you genuinely use them.
€200 annual online travel credit
Platinum cardholders receive a €200 annual travel credit for eligible bookings through the American Express online travel portal.
It can be used towards selected flights, hotels, or rental cars.
For travellers already planning to book through the portal, this is a relatively straightforward benefit.
Nevertheless, I recommend comparing prices before booking. A €200 credit isn't necessarily worth €200 in actual savings if the same reservation costs significantly less elsewhere.
€150 annual restaurant credit
The Platinum Card also provides an annual restaurant credit of up to €150 at participating restaurants in Germany and abroad.
The offer must be activated, and only eligible spending at participating restaurants qualifies.
For someone who enjoys exploring restaurants while travelling, this can be particularly attractive.
It might help turn an ordinary evening into a memorable dinner somewhere special.
€200 annual SIXT ride credit
Another benefit is the annual €200 SIXT ride credit.
This consists of eight individual €25 credits for eligible rides, rather than one freely spendable €200 balance.
Depending on availability and booking conditions, it can be useful for airport transfers and other journeys.
Just remember that the actual saving depends on whether SIXT ride is a service you would otherwise choose.
Additional benefits
There is also a €100 annual shopping credit with LODENFREY and a Lounge on the Go benefit worth up to €120 annually, currently involving six eligible refreshments credits of up to €20 at selected locations at Frankfurt and Munich airports.
Together, these advertised credits can total up to €770 annually.
But maximum theoretical value is not the same as personal value.
If you never use SIXT ride, don't shop at LODENFREY, or rarely fly through participating Lounge on the Go locations, those benefits may be worth little to you.
Registration, booking rules, validity periods, and other conditions apply.
5. Travel Insurance: One of the Most Important Benefits
While airport lounges and hotel upgrades are the most exciting features to discuss, travel insurance might ultimately be among the most financially significant.
Travelling involves uncertainty.
Flights can be cancelled, luggage can disappear, rental cars can be damaged, and medical emergencies can happen unexpectedly.
The German American Express Platinum Card includes several travel insurance policies designed to protect against certain risks.
But there's an essential distinction: having the card doesn't automatically mean every trip and every possible incident is covered.
For most core travel insurance benefits, the trip or relevant expense must have been paid with the eligible Platinum Card, and all policy conditions must be satisfied.
Let's examine the major components.
International travel medical insurance
Medical treatment abroad can become extremely expensive, especially in countries where healthcare costs are high.
The Platinum Card includes international travel medical coverage for eligible trips of up to 120 consecutive days.
According to the 2026 insurance documentation, eligible medical treatment and hospital costs are covered without a fixed overall monetary limit, subject to the policy conditions.
The insurance can also arrange or reimburse certain medically justified repatriation costs.
However, the coverage includes an excess of 10% of the eligible claim, with a minimum of €100 and a maximum of €500 per insured person per claim.
Medical coverage is limited to insured persons under 80 years old. Pre-existing medical conditions, certain treatments, and other situations may be excluded.
For me, this is precisely why the insurance terms deserve more attention than the attractive headline benefits.
Before relying on any credit card's health insurance for a major journey, check whether it covers your personal circumstances and the destination.
Trip cancellation and interruption insurance
Imagine organising an expensive trip months in advance, only to discover shortly before departure that you cannot travel for a covered reason.
Non-refundable flights, hotels, and other reservations can quickly become costly.
American Express Platinum includes trip cancellation and interruption protection, potentially reimbursing eligible losses of up to €6,000 per insured person and trip.
A deductible applies: generally 10% of the reimbursable amount, with a minimum of €100 per insured person.
Not every reason for cancelling qualifies.
For example, simply changing your mind is not the same as cancelling because of an insured event. Pre-existing health conditions and circumstances already known when booking may also affect eligibility.
Flight delays and missed connections
Few travel experiences are more frustrating than arriving at the airport and discovering that your flight is significantly delayed or cancelled.
The Platinum travel inconvenience insurance may reimburse up to €200 per insured person for qualifying additional expenses when a covered travel disruption leaves you without an alternative within the specified four-hour period.
Covered situations can include eligible delays, cancellations, overbooking, and missed connections.
The expenses must meet the policy conditions, and you should retain receipts and documentation from the airline.
This is intended to compensate for certain additional costs. It is not a guarantee of compensation for every delay and does not replace any applicable passenger rights against the airline.
Delayed or lost baggage
Arriving in a new country without your suitcase is an unpleasant way to begin a holiday.
The Platinum insurance can help with certain essential replacement purchases when checked baggage is delayed.
Under the current terms, eligible expenses may be reimbursed up to €400 after a qualifying four-hour delay, with a further €400 potentially available after 48 hours.
Separately, the baggage insurance provides coverage of up to €3,000 per insured person per trip for qualifying loss or damage, subject to limits on individual items and a deductible.
Certain high-value items, cash, and documentation have specific limits. You should never assume that every expensive item in your luggage is fully insured.
Rental car insurance
Road trips offer wonderful freedom, but rental car insurance can be expensive and confusing.
The Platinum Card includes rental car insurance with coverage for eligible vehicle damage or theft of up to €75,000, alongside a separate liability component.
The vehicle damage cover has a €200 deductible per qualifying claim.
However, the policy has restrictions regarding eligible rentals, vehicles, payment, drivers, and rental circumstances.
Before declining insurance offered by a rental company, verify that the Platinum policy provides the protection you actually need in that particular country.
Who else can be insured?
One attractive feature is that coverage may extend beyond the main cardholder.
Eligible supplementary cardholders, partners living at the same registered address, and qualifying dependent children can also be covered.
There are specific age, household and travel requirements, so the exact eligibility must be checked.
Five insurance rules I'd never ignore
Before travelling, I would always verify the following:
Whether the relevant trip and expenses have been paid with the Platinum Card as required.
Whether the destination, planned activities, and trip duration are covered.
Whether exclusions apply, especially for pre-existing medical conditions.
What excesses, compensation limits, and reporting requirements apply.
Whether the coverage is sufficient or an additional standalone policy would be more suitable.
Not all benefits require card use: certain assistance services, including eligible European vehicle assistance, have different conditions.
For the complete details, consult the official American Express Platinum insurance conditions (PDF).
My view: Travel insurance is an important part of the Platinum package, but it's only valuable if it genuinely fits your needs. I would never treat it as unlimited protection simply because it's included with a premium card.
6. Membership Rewards: Turning Spending Into Future Adventures
Another interesting feature of American Express Platinum is its Membership Rewards programme.
The principle is straightforward: eligible everyday purchases earn points that you can later redeem for different rewards.
With the standard programme, cardholders generally earn one Membership Rewards point for every eligible euro spent.
An optional Membership Rewards Turbo programme, currently costing €15 annually, can increase the earning rate for qualifying spending.
What can you do with the points?
Membership Rewards points are flexible.
Depending on the available partners and redemption conditions, you can use them towards flights, transfer them to participating airline or hotel loyalty programmes, book certain travel services, or choose alternative rewards.
For travellers, transferring points to airline loyalty programmes can be particularly interesting.
Points might help reduce the cost of a future journey, contribute towards a reward flight, or provide opportunities for a more comfortable cabin.
However, the value of a Membership Rewards point is not fixed.
It depends on how you redeem it, the partner's conversion rate, taxes and fees, and the availability of rewards.
Therefore, I would be cautious about any advertisement claiming that a certain number of points is automatically worth a particular cash amount.
The real opportunity lies in understanding the programme and using points strategically.
7. The Current Referral Offer: Up to 85,000 Membership Rewards Points
Now, let's talk about the limited-time offer.
American Express is currently promoting an enhanced referral bonus through 11 November 2026.
Eligible new Platinum cardholders applying through a qualifying referral link can earn up to 85,000 Membership Rewards points.
The bonus is divided into two spending milestones.
First milestone: 40,000 points
Spend at least €6,000 in eligible purchases within the first six months after receiving the card.
Second milestone: an additional 45,000 points
Spend another €4,000 in eligible purchases during the same six-month period.
That means the full 85,000-point bonus requires at least €10,000 in eligible card spending within six months.
The account must remain in good standing, and the card must not be cancelled or changed to an ineligible product within the first 12 months.
Applicants also need to meet the eligibility requirements, including restrictions concerning previous ownership of the corresponding German American Express card within the past 18 months.
Cash withdrawals, card fees, and certain other transactions do not count towards the spending threshold.
My advice: Never spend money you wouldn't otherwise spend just to reach a credit card bonus.
A generous points offer becomes far less attractive if it encourages unnecessary purchases.

8. The Real Question: Is the Platinum Worth €720 a Year?
Here's where I think the decision becomes interesting.
It's easy to look at a long list of benefits and conclude that a premium card must represent excellent value.
But benefits only have financial value when they replace expenses you would realistically have made anyway.
Consider a hypothetical traveller who uses the following benefits during a year:
Benefit | Personal value |
Online travel credit | €200 |
Restaurant credit | €150 |
SIXT ride credits actually used | €100 |
LODENFREY credit | €0 |
Total credits used | €450 |
After accounting for these credits, that traveller still needs to justify €270 of the annual fee.
Perhaps regular airport lounge visits, Condor flight discounts, hotel benefits and suitable insurance coverage make up the difference.
Perhaps they don't.
A traveller booking an eligible Condor Business Class return flight could potentially save another €200.
Someone who frequently visits lounges and stays at participating hotels might find further value.
But someone travelling once or twice annually, staying in budget accommodation and rarely using the credits may struggle to justify the cost.
Don't mistake theoretical benefits for guaranteed savings.
The best calculation is a personal one.
9. What Are the Downsides?
For all its attractive benefits, the Platinum Card has disadvantages that shouldn't be overlooked.
The high annual fee: At €720, the membership represents a considerable ongoing expense. The sign-up bonus is temporary; the annual fee continues.
Foreign currency charges: The German card generally applies a 2% foreign currency conversion fee. For extensive spending outside the euro area, a separate card without foreign transaction fees could be useful.
Acceptance limitations: Although widely accepted internationally, American Express isn't accepted everywhere. Carrying an alternative Visa or Mastercard is sensible, particularly for smaller businesses and more remote destinations.
Conditional benefits: Some offers require registration, specific booking channels, or qualifying merchants. Using them effectively requires a little organisation.
Points aren't cash: Membership Rewards can be valuable, but redemption value varies and programme conditions can change.
These drawbacks don't necessarily make the card a poor choice. They simply mean it should be selected thoughtfully rather than impulsively.
10. Who Should Consider the American Express Platinum?
I see the Platinum Card as particularly relevant for people who travel several times annually and are willing to organise their spending and bookings around the available benefits.
It could be especially interesting if you regularly use airport lounges, book participating premium hotels, fly with Condor, travel with a partner who could benefit from a Platinum supplementary card, and genuinely use the annual credits.
On the other hand, if you're primarily looking for a simple card with no annual fee and no foreign transaction charges, Platinum probably isn't the most practical solution.
It also isn't a reason to spend more money or book more expensive trips just to feel you're taking advantage of its benefits.
The right travel card should fit your lifestyle — not dictate it.
Final Thoughts: A Better Travel Experience, If You Use It Wisely
For me, the most interesting aspect of premium travel benefits isn't luxury for the sake of luxury.
It's about making the experience of travelling smoother, more comfortable, and sometimes more memorable.
A relaxing lounge during a long connection, a convenient late hotel check-out, or protection against certain unexpected travel costs can all make a difference.
The American Express Platinum Card combines many of these possibilities into one membership.
But at €720 per year, it requires a realistic assessment of how often you'll use them.
The current welcome offer of up to 85,000 Membership Rewards points is an attractive additional incentive for eligible applicants, provided they can comfortably satisfy the spending requirements without unnecessary purchases.
If you've been considering the card, I hope this guide helps you understand both its opportunities and its limitations.
And if the benefits genuinely match your travel habits, you can explore the current offer below.
